Off the Ground

is Tucson's newest, great band, formed by experienced, talented musician singer/songwriters, most of whom are well known to local music lovers. They play an eclectic mix of up-beat, fun dance music with a basis in rock, soul and funk with an emphasis on catchy, groovy original tunes. This band will definitely catch on and become a staple in the Tucson music scene. Excellent musicianship, jaw-dropping vocals and harmonies and high energy, as well as great songs will be the hallmark of this band!   

Larry Gould

Born in Los Angeles, California, Larry Gould has been active in the music industry playing bass guitar, lead vocals and as a songwriter. His performances include headlining venues from The Hollywood Bowl to Tokyo, Japan.


At 18, he was signed by Capital Records and CAA (Creative Artist Agency) and toured the U.S. as the founding member of the original “Knack.”

Additional recording sessions were completed at Warner Brothers, RCA, Columbia and National General.

Larry has shared the stage with Fleetwood Mac, Chicago, BBKing, The Doors, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Rivers and

Pink Floyd.

Larry has performed with Mike McDonald, The Standells, 1910 Fruit Gum Company and with Glen Campbell in Strange Homecoming (movie 1974).

Since 2006, he has lived in Tucson and continues to write, record and perform his original songs. Currently, he is in a project with Off the Ground, Tucson's all star band, playing energetic, inspiring covers as well as his fantastic originals.

Jaye Parks

Jaye spent 11 years in the greater Portland/Salem, OR metro area with several bands, all centered around she and Dennis Zelmer. The duo, bluegrass trio, Dizzy Pajamas, Paper Moon (a swing band) and lastly, The J-Walkers. Focusing on “Favorite Songs of the Century” they designed each show to fit the audience. Hundreds of shows in dozens of venues, Jaye honed her craft and has a signature style and voice. They recorded a CD of originals and then a double CD before she left for Tucson.

Since moving to Tucson, she has been searching for just the right musicians to form a band with and has finally found it with Off the Ground.

Franz Thuringer

Franz grew up listening to Motown, Blues and Rock and Roll in the 60's and 70's

He started Playing professionally at age 17

Musical influences: Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Smith and Jan Hammer

He played in various bands in 70's and 80's in AZ and Las Vegas, NV.

Likes keyboard greats in Blues, Jazz and Rock. He worked with Phoenix Gospel Group - Freedom Singers in the late 1990's

Currently, he also plays in the band “Armed at Night”, a Classic Rock band.

LES Merrihew

Les is a seasoned drummer, having played for many years and with many bands. He has opened for Lee Michaels, Jim Croce, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Earl Skruggs Revue, Delaney Bramlett, Ian Mathews, Cold Blood, Roy Buchannon, Buckwheat Zydeco and many others. He has also been a backup drummer with The Coasters, The Drifters, Albert Collins, Jimmy McCracklin, Charlie Musselwhite, Pinetop Perkins and Little Milton.

He has recently relocated to Tucson from Seattle and has become one of Tucson's most in-demand drummers.

Gene Holmes

Deeply rooted in the blues, Gene started his professional career opening for The Allman Joys, later to become the Allman Brothers Band. He made his first record in Muscle Shoals, AL and then moved to Los Angeles. He did studio work for legendary producer Robert "Bumps" Blackwell, Mike Post and others. He toured extensively with Little Richard for many years, during which he shared the stage with greats such as Albert Collins, Chuck Berry, Bo Didley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin and many others.

After leaving Little Richards' band, Gene went on to co-found the all-original band "Waves." They signed with Polydor Records and with April-Blackwood (CBS) Music as a song writer. He co-wrote the song "Take Me There," which entered the Billboard Top 100 chart in the late 1970's.
