Silk and Soul- $5: Sunday, December 17, 2017 | 06:00pm-09:00pm

Silk and Soul is the husband and wife team of Mark and Arlette Willis. Arlette is an exceptional soprano and Mark accompanies her at the piano. He also plays a mean blues harmonica. Arlette and Mark have been performing for thousands of clients since High School.

Silk and Soul have traveled across the USA, with invitations to Japan and Russia. Their love of music spans many genres and generations including Jazz, Blues, Hollywood, Broadway, Funk, R&B and Soul.

Some say vocally, we sound like Whitney Houston and Darius Rucker. Go figure! Anyway, we blend Hollywood, Broadway and R&B and Soul influences in our shows.

Humble Beginnings

I met Arlette in December 1977 and started performing together in 1978. We got married in 1981, and played many weddings in Detroit. Sang and played in church, for conferences and special events throughout the Greater Detroit area.

In June 1981, Mark went to a recording studio to help a friend, Joe Stonestreet (of R&B’s Blackstreet) track a song he wrote. Mark’s playing caught the ear of Earl Van Dyke (creator of The Motown Review) and Thomas “Beans” Bowles, (former music director at Motown and composer of “Fingertips”) who were in the sound booth. A recording contract offer and a lifelong friendship with Beans and his sons Harold and Dennis would follow.

At a grand opening for a Detroit museum in 1989, world renowned trumpeter Marcus Belgrave who heard him play, enthusiastically offered Mark a position in his band to travel to Indonesia to perform with him that fall.

Major Accomplishments

Arlette consistent won vocal competitions at Interlochen Arts Academy. Mark and Arlette opened for Yolanda Adams, performed for Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Mark played a duet with Stevie Wonder, played the Apollo Theater, shared the stage with Jazz Gospel pianist Ben Tankard and The Contours. Mark received offers to work with  Al Hudson and One Way, The Dramatics and R&B artist, DeAngelo,on keyboard.
